Fear of the Lord

The fear of God seems to be present when there is a healthy respect and honor for the Word of God and the Lordship of Christ in our personal lives. There is something about authority that brings a healthy reverence. God has not made His authority particularly easy, due to the fact that He has chosen not to be in your face, but rather He has elected to reveal His authority in a hidden way. Meaning, God is in charge, even if you cannot see His physical hand or material throne. We therefore keep ourselves accountable to God’s authority by bowing to His Word, through expressing songs of adoration and affection, by loving one another and by placing absolute faith in Christ.

Look at that last phrase “faith in Christ.” That little word “faith” is the entire ball game, the entrance point, the required quality for relationship and receiving God’s gifts. Faith is that amazing quality that enables us to trust God’s love by embracing His present provision, no matter what the provision might be or how confusing that provision might seem. Second, faith is that quality of character that has the ability to remain faithful. As we express this kind of faith in Christ a deep reverence is developed in our hearts and a whole new way of thinking and looking at things is born.

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of true knowledge, … Proverbs 1:7 NLT

Fear of the Lord is the foundation of wisdom.

Proverbs 9:10 NLT

Fear of the Lord teaches wisdom…

Proverbs 15:33 NLT

I am convinced that the greatest need of every follower is to develop a relationship with God that is built on the foundation of reverence—the fear of the Lord. May we become uncomfortable with trusting in our own stuff, our own way, our own ideas. May we trust what God has given, even the paradoxes, and fear His name in such a way that we would not lean back on our own understandings. Look for God to wow you, to still your heart, to shut your mouth, and to leave you speechless in His glory so you can once again be awed by God.
