The 3 Witnesses

Sometimes we get involved in living, and we forget what an awesome witness we have of God’s work in our souls. It says in I John 5 that there were three key witnesses to Jesus’ divinity. First, His baptism, where the Father spoke, “This is my Son.” Next is His crucifixion, where God raised Him from the dead and formed resurrection life in Him. Finally, the Holy Spirit, Who, all the while, was confirming Jesus’ divinity through miracles, signs and wonders, then in the resurrection, and finally, when Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit on the entire world. These were all powerful witnesses in the life of Christ, testifying to the fact that He is divine; sent from God for all so that we can believe He is the Son of God, with no doubt.

Jesus—the Divine Christ! He experienced a life-giving birth and a death-killing death. Not only birth from the womb, but baptismal birth of His ministry and sacrificial death. And all the while the Spirit is confirming the truth, the reality of God's presence at Jesus' baptism and crucifixion, bringing those occasions alive for us. A triple testimony: the Spirit, the Baptism, the Crucifixion. And the three in perfect agreement.  I John 5:6-8 MSG

I wish to make another point. The same testimony God gave to bear witness that Jesus was divine, is the same testimony He assures our hearts with: we belong to Him, which should give us great confidence and a spectacular self-image.

1. Baptism—is not merely getting wet, followed by some religious formula pronounced over your soul. Baptism was the time where you abandoned all and renounced all that stood in the way of you knowing Christ. It was the moment when you were baptized in the Name of Jesus Christ and gave yourself, with joy, to taking on His life, nature and ways. It was at baptism that you said, “I want to become God’s child and live for what pleases Him.”

2. Crucifixion—Obviously God does not call any of us to be crucified, but to recognize and consider ourselves as having died with Christ when He died on the cross (Romans 6:6). It is not that we work religion and seek to kill our old nature; we declare our old nature dead in Christ. As we have a relationship with Christ, our old self dies and our new self lives.

3. Holy Spirit—Lastly, there is that moment when you are awakened to the fact that you are God’s child; that you belong to Him, He is your father, you are His child and He cares for you. You are so taken with His care for you, that you call Him Abba, Papa or you say in your heart: “You personally care for me.”

It would be one thing to be baptized; it is another thing to realize that you died with Christ when He died on the cross 2000 years ago, and that you are only able to overcome sin in Him, not in your own strength. However, when you submit to baptism and renounce your former life, receive God’s new life, completely depend on His death and resurrection, are filled with the Holy Spirit, and have a complete identity change, well, that’s just too much evidence—you are a child of God; all of that could never be done in your own strength. So power up your confidence—you are His!
